Connecting the RACO Catalyst RTU to the Hach Water Distribution Panel

A RACO Catalyst remote telemetry unit (RTU)  is an ideal companion to a Hach Water Distribution Panel (WDP). With the right hardware and RACO Alarmware software, plus some easy-to-follow instructions, setting up the system is easy.

Required Equipment

A Hach WDP/Catalyst system involves connecting a Hach Mod I/O (#598000) to the WDP through an Aquatrend network cable (#5215700). The RTU communicates with the Mod I/O through an RS232 null modem cable. The RTU also is connected to a dedicated Plane Old Telephone System (POTS) with an RJ11 phone cord. The setup allows the Catalyst RTU to monitor the WDP through the Mod I/O interface, and perform the proper notifications in case of an alarm.

Also required is a PC equipped with a Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system, a 56k modem, a 400 Mhz or faster processor and an RS232 serial port.

The Process

1. Connect all the hardware using their respective instruction manuals, then install the Alarmware software using the included instructions. The Alarmware software CD also includes a .pdf instruction manual for the Catalyst RTU, with directions for the software and RTU wiring and operation.

2. Now, it is time to configure the Alarmware software. Following RACO’s setup instructions, define the alarm set points, and select a schedule for data logging. Then, set up the desired communication methods for alarm notification—these can include phone, fax or e-mail instructions—and create PIN numbers that can be entered to indicate an alarm notice was acknowledged. The system also allows users to name RTUs, net names, destinations and PINs, so they can be easily identified in any status reports, and define how messages and updates will appear in the report.

3. Connect the Alarmware software to the RTU to update the new settings, and then connect the remote PC, with Alarmware installed to the RTU via a phone line.
