Why does the RTU show zero bars on the signal strength meter when the unit is transmitting?

The RTU must change from receive, to transmit mode, in order to transmit information. During this brief period of time, you will notice the signal strength disappear, then reappear. This is normal behavior. If the signal strength stays at zero bars, there may be an issue if there had been good signal prior to zero bars.
